The Mellor Sisters - Born to Entertain!
It’s natural that The Mellor Sisters are more than at ease on stage and in music – their father was a big band musician, their mother a big band singer, and their grandfather played first violin with the legendary Fats Waller, amongst other people (as a child, Eric Mellor and his family even played the music in theatres to accompany silent films). Their grandmother was a 1930’s & 40’s Dancehall queen, performing amongst the big names of the day (George Formby and the like). Great-grandparents and their parents; they all made music and gravitated around theatres. Needless to say, entertainment runs deep in the Sisters’ gene pool, and they have an effortless ease and camaraderie on stage.
With harmonies sweeter than honey, blending as only true sibling harmonies can, The Mellor Sisters in their Vintage and Jazz act are singing and swinging to the songs of the 40’s and 50’s, offering to take you for a wander down memory lane, to remind you of a time when Britain and her people truly were Great; in fact they were more than that; they were heroes.
How they created their sound
Victoria and Rebecca started singing together in their teens, in a girl vocal trio they put together themselves, writing and recording their own material. This progressed over the years into an array of recording and performing projects in many genres, only enhancing their songwriting skills, effortless harmonies, and stage presence along the way. They say that every project they have worked on has led to this; it has all been part of the fabric that has produced The Mellor Sisters’ sound, and unmistakeably strong brand.
Training - West End and TV
In 2006, Victoria, now an Equity-accredited actress, got offered a much sought-after place at the prestigious Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, where she studied voice, dance, acting and TV training; equipping her equally for Stage or TV work. It was from the Mountview West End Showcase at the Criterion Theatre that she was hailed “Experts’ Choice” in The Stage Newspaper, receiving a glowing review and hailed as “a rising star” (and even making the front cover!)
Whilst Victoria was studying at Mountview, Rebecca took the opportunity to write and record her own music, singing with a band and cultivating her jazz tones, being an avid lover of the music and films from that era. Rebecca had already experienced some stagecraft training early during her childhood as a part-time pupil at The Sylvia Young Theatre School, where she took vocal and acting lessons for both the big screen and stage - and even got to sing for the Queen at VJ Day (a pre-cursor for future Forces events, maybe?!)
TV Appearances
Since their launch two years ago, the Sisters have enjoyed appearances on ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’ (twice – both times performing self-penned jingles for various segments on the show). The first time, singing in the weather with Laura Tobin. The second time was with the well-know TV presenter Andi Peters, the girls wrote a jingle for the competition in his segment, and then did a pre-record for another showing at a later date.
Made in Cardiff TV’s ‘The Crunch’ – this featured a behind-the scenes look at the Girls recording their new album, an interview and a live pre-record of them singing three tracks from their album. TV is something that they would like to do more of; their natural ease on stage also flows through onto camera – more than once they have been called the ‘female Ant and Dec’ during their TV performances! They improvise and take direction well; coping easily with the pressures of live broadcasting.
Forces' Sweethearts
Undoubtedly one of their favourite sides to their job is the work they do for the Armed Forces! The Royal Air Force is a client very dear to the Sisters’ hearts; they have been performing for the elite of the RAF since their launch year, and name them as one of their regular and dearest clients. They consider it an honour and privilege, and hope that their association with the RAF long continues. The Royal Navy – again a privilege and honour; they perform at the annual ‘Taranto’ celebrations for the Royal Navy Aviators.
Hollywood Royalty
The Sisters have performed a number of times with Bing Crosby’s grandson, Phil Crosby Jr. Bing collaborated on several tracks with The Andrews Sisters so The Mellor Sisters and Phil was a musical match made in heaven! Its something that may happen again in the future; stay tuned!
Steamy Sisters
The Mellor Sisters put on a public performance for Armed Forces weekend at Swanage Steam Railway (as featured in the Hollywood blockbuster ‘Dunkirk’). The backdrop suited the girls to a T, and the public revelled in the authenticity of the vintage performance married with the beautifully vintage nature of the Railway (see videoclips for footage). The highlight of the event was meeting a WW2 RAF Veteran who sat in front of them with tears in his eyes (as did the girls) throughout “The White Cliffs of Dover”; he said to them afterwards that he hadn’t heard it sung like that since the War, and it brought back memories of lost comrades and loved ones. Moments like that are what make their job an absolute joy.
Weddings
The Mellor Sisters have provided the perfect soundtrack to many a wedding! Be it singing the bride down the aisle, singing during cocktails at reception arrival time, singing some smooth jazz during the wedding breakfast, or getting the party started at the evening reception with their fantastic repertoire of jazz and swing numbers – the Girls can cover any part of the day, and enjoy liaising with brides and wedding planners to help make the Big Day the most memorable ever for the happy couple!
